surrender a pet

We are a limited-admission facility.  We do not euthanize due to space or time constraints. We only take in as many as we can commit to each week.

Need a little help? Before making an appointment, take a look at the 2021 Indy Pet Resource Flyer for a comprehensive list of low-cost pet services, food pantries, and more.

Should you decide to surrender your pet, you will need to call for an appointment, for both strays and owner surrenders.

Call 317.872.5650 x 0 and leave a voicemail to be added to the waitlist for a return call from our team. A representative will follow up with you as they are able for more information and to schedule an appointment.
Due to the number of requests we receive, it may take a few days for your call to be returned, and it may be a few weeks until we are able to schedule an appointment.

IndyHumane requires a $40 fee to surrender an animal. This pays for your pet’s basic vaccinations needed to safely enter the shelter. We do not receive any tax money or funding from national animal welfare groups for the care of our animals, and we invest hundreds of dollars in the average animal’s care.

If you are not able to wait for an appointment at our shelter, you can contact the Indianapolis city animal shelter, Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS):
2600 South Harding St.
Indianapolis, IN 46221

Visit their website for animal intake hours and more information.

For outdoor cats, contact Indy Neighborhood Cats.
