It's easy to join the fun.

FAQ

Who can participate?

You must be 18 years or older to take a dog out for the day. If you’re under 18, you can still join in on the fun, but a parent or guardian needs to come along.

How does this program benefit our dogs?

Dog Day Out gives our pups a chance to relax and enjoy a break from shelter life. It also helps get them noticed by potential adopters as they explore the community with you! Plus, they come back to the shelter happier and more refreshed, making their stay a little easier.

At the end of your day, feel free to send us some photos of your adventure! You can email them to us or share them directly on Facebook to help showcase your pup and get them one step closer to finding a forever home. If you share them, don’t forget to tag @indyhumane, so that we can repost it!

Does it cost anything?

This program is completely free, but we appreciate even the smallest donation to help IndyHumane continue providing compassionate care for our animals.

Can I spend more than one day with the dog?

Absolutely! If you're interested in a longer getaway for a dog in need, our foster program might be for you. This gives animals a little vacation from the shelter and helps us learn more about their personalities.

Can I adopt my Dog Day Out pup?

No pressure at all—but yes, if you fall in love, you can absolutely adopt your new best friend!

the perfect day with Leanne

Today, I had the pleasure of taking Leanne, one of our amazing IndyHumane dogs, out for an adventure! We explored the scenic trails at Marrott Park in Broad Ripple, where Leanne greeted every person and dog we met with friendly curiosity. She was a wonderful passenger, happily riding along, and even enjoyed a cheeseburger from Wendy’s with the grace of a true lady!

As a board member at IndyHumane, I'm proud to support our Dog Day Out program. Experiences like these provide dogs with enriching, healthy interactions that ease stress, improve social skills, and increase their chances of finding a loving home. A simple outing can transform a shelter dog’s life—and bring joy to everyone involved.

Thank you for supporting IndyHumane and making these days out possible!
