Rescue Relief is an IndyHumane program that rescues slightly damaged bags of food and pet supplies from local pet supply warehouses and then redistributes them to over 143+ rescues and shelters across Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. One of our partners in Ohio, United Pet Fund, is a similar distribution facility like ours and has additional members in their program that are impacted by the donations they pick up from us.
Each rescue pays a small fee per visit, to assist in covering the costs of the program. Most of these organizations have told us that they are now able to reallocate their animal care funds to cover the costs of surgeries and medicines, instead of food, which is increasing quality of care and the number of animals that receive a second chance. Several dozen organizations also pull items they are able to sell through fundraisers, which helps them raise additional funds to support their organizations.
All members in Rescue Relief are required to share intake and adoption numbers with us. In 2016 – our first year of executing this program – more 30,000 animals were impacted by Rescue Relief, and that number has been growing ever since.
In 2018, more than 480,000 pounds of food and supplies were rescued from the landfill and distributed to other rescues and shelters.
On the first and third Saturday of each month, we open up our Rescue Relief warehouse to the public from 10am – 2pm for a Pop-Up Pantry so that everyone can enjoy access to low-cost supplies.
