IndyHumane receives grant from Tony Stewart Foundation to help 350 families in need

IndyHumane will receive the funds to support Pet Pantry.

INDIANAPOLIS –IndyHumane received $10,000 from Tony Stewart Foundation to continue and grow the IndyHumane Pet Pantry. The money is set to help 350 families in need throughout central Indiana.

The goal for the Pet Pantry is to bring pet food resources to people who need them and to ultimately keep animals out of the shelter. One in 5 of American households added a pet during the first 14 months of the pandemic the beginning of the pandemic and 90% still had their pets in early 2021.1 Since then, the cost of pet food, vet visits and more has gone up, and shelters are seeing a disturbing trend. At IndyHumane, owner surrenders far surpassed the 290 owner surrenders accepted in 2021 with a total of 819 surrenders in 2022 (182% increase).The Pet Pantry program provides large, consistent amounts of pet food and supplies directly to low-income central Indiana families through partnerships with social service organizations like Hawthorne Community Center, Damien Center, Hoosier Veterans Aassistance Foundation (HVAF), and the Central Indiana Council on Aging (CICOA). The pantry also provides pet food and supplies other organizations such as Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside (FIDO
