Owner-Requested Euthanasia

The Humane Society of Indianapolis offers dog and cat euthanasia services to the community by appointment for pets who are suffering and terminally ill.

Appointments are made based on the availability of our certified humane-euthanasia Veterinary Technicians. Please call 317-872-5650 ext.163 and leave a detailed message if you have questions about these services or wish to make an appointment.

We will do our best to accommodate you but cannot guarantee appointments will be available at your requested time. We can refer you to other options if that is the case.

Please note, if your pet has not recently been to a veterinarian and you wish to make a euthanasia appointment, we may refuse the appointment.  It is important to have your pet seen by a full service veterinarian at least once a year.

If your pet is extremely injured or ill and cannot wait for an appointment, or if your pet is in need of emergency care, please contact a local emergency veterinarian.

We do not euthanize healthy or adoptable animals.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services offers euthanasia services for free to the Marion County public. The address is 2600 S. Harding Street, and no appointment is needed. The service is only available during their regular business hours.

Deceased animal pick-up services are provided by the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) Solid Waste Services crew. If the deceased animal is on private property, please call the Mayor's Action Center (MAC) at 327-4MAC to make arrangements for pick up.

If your animal passes away at home, deceased pet communal cremation is offered for $60 at the Humane Society of Indianapolis. No appointment is necessary, come to the "Incoming Animals" door between the hours of 8 and 4pm, 7 days a week.

Basic Services

The fee for euthanasia is $100. Your pet will be handled respectfully and cremated in a communal process. Their ashes will be scattered with care in our memory garden along our dog walking trails on the south part of the property.

Unfortunately, IndyHumane is not able to allow patrons to be with their pets during the euthanasia process. Our euthanasia room is located in the interior of the building and we limit access since this requires walking through animal holding and medical areas. After checking in and saying your good-byes in our lobby, our staff would take your pet from you and our highly-skilled and compassionate medical team would perform the euthanasia.

If you prefer to be with your pet during the euthanasia process, please contact your private, local veterinarian for an appointment.

Special Services

Pet Angel provides private cremations which are available for an additional fee of $200 through the Humane Society of Indianapolis (including the euthanasia, the total cost is $300). With a private cremation, your pet's remains will be returned in a small cherry wood box, which will be delivered to the shelter for pick-up at your convenience.

You can also get a resin paw print for an additional $20 with either the base euthanasia + group cremation ($100 total) or the euthanasia + private cremation ($300 total).

Memorial packages, including urns, jewelry, and stones are available through our partner Pet Angel, with varying fees listed on their website. For information about the packages, call 317.791.1070. Pet Angel supports the Humane Society of Indianapolis by giving a $1 donation for every private cremation done at all clinics in the Indianapolis area.
