What type of vehicles do you accept as donations?
We accept most cars, trucks, vans, fleet vehicles, trailers, boats, motorcycles, and RV's. If you have any questions about what you can donate, please call our vehicle donation specialists at 800.456.5517.
My car hasn't run in years. Can I still donate it?
It depends on the car’s overall condition. The car must have an engine and be towable. Cars that are in poor condition may be declined, as the cost to tow them may be more than the value of the vehicle.
Is my car donation tax deductible?
Vehicles donated will benefit the Humane Society of Indianapolis, Inc., a nonprofit classified with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and are tax deductible. The IRS has published a guide for vehicle donations, which you can read by clicking here.
What paperwork will I need for the DMV?
You will need to sign a release of liability and donation confirmation. Our driver will provide you with all the necessary paperwork. Once you sign the release of liability, you have five days to mail it to the DMV. Our driver will provide you with the address.
What if I lost the title (pink slip)?
As long as you are the legal titleholder, our driver can pick up the vehicle and have you sign a duplicate title, which he or she will provide.
What does IndyHumane do with the vehicles?
The vehicles are typically sold at private auction. The proceeds are used to help support IndyHumane. Funds from vehicle donations are considered unrestricted gifts and will be used to fund operations at IndyHumane and the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center.
Do I get a receipt for my donation which shows how much money my car raised for IndyHumane?
It depends. When your vehicle is picked up, the tow driver will provide a tax receipt for your donation that will be sufficient for vehicles valued up to $500. If your vehicle is sold for more than $500, you will receive a new receipt with the exact amount of your donation.
If you have specific questions regarding how to claim your deduction, please consult this IRS handout, call us directly at 317.872.5650 x129, or email email@example.com.
Can I value my vehicle before I donate it to IndyHumane?
You are more than welcome to independently assess the value of your vehicle prior to donation; however, your evaluation cannot influence or guarantee the final selling price, which will determine your charitable contribution to IndyHumane. If you would like to determine the value of your vehicle prior to donation, we recommend Kelley Blue Book at www.kbb.com or Nada www.nadaguides.com.
Are all cars donated to IndyHumane sold at auction?
Not always, but it is most likely the case. Some are sold in private sales managed by third parties, and some are sold for scrap.
How will my car, truck, boat, or RV be picked up?
Our vehicle donation specialist will arrange to have your vehicle towed away at a scheduled time, typically within 48 hours of placing your call. Call 800.456.5517 to schedule a time for your vehicle to be picked up.

IndyHumane assisting Sevier County Humane Society following wildfires
December 5th, 2016
The Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) will be transporting dog and cat food, puppy pads, pelleted cat litter, crates, and other pet supplies to the Sevier County Humane Society on Tuesday, December 6, to assist with the shelter’s needs following the wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The Sevier County Humane Society has opened an emergency shelter location at the Sevier County Fairgrounds. At this location, the shelter is accepting stray animals as well as offering shelter for pets whose owners have been displaced from their homes due to the fires. The public has been instructed to go to the fairgrounds to search for any missing pets. Pet owners from the area can also board pets at this location temporarily if their homes were destroyed. Heather Hamilton, Operations Manager at the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center, contacted Sevier County Humane Society to see if the shelter was in need of supplies.
