IndyHumane to Rescue Dogs from Puerto Rico:  Animals Arrive Monday Night

October 16th, 2017

More than 100 hurricane-displaced animals, mostly dogs, will arrive in the U.S. today thanks to the rescue efforts and leadership of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Locally, IndyHumane was selected as one of the rescue partners on this project. IndyHumane will help transport, care for and find new homes for the pets left homeless by the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

“This is a big deal for Indianapolis and for IndyHumane,” said Steven Stolen, CEO of IndyHumane. “We were selected because we have proven to be a community leader and a successful, reliable partner on other rescue projects. Our reputation and quality work of our medical clinic and behavioral team attribute to why we were selected. Additionally, we have a capable, large, and agile volunteer group that will play an important role in organizing and assisting with our animal welfare partners.”

The animals are from the small island of Veiques and foster homes on the main island through All Sato Rescue, which means they will arrive with health certificates and vaccines. The animals will be transported from the Indianapolis Regional Airport to the IndyHumane facilities, where they will follow standard protocol and animal care.

The situation is heartbreaking,” said Kimberley Alboum, Shelter Outreach & Policy Engagement Director. “The needs are overwhelming at this point. We are working to bring daily supplies to the island and remove homeless pets. Partners such as IndyHumane are critical to our life-saving mission.”

IndyHumane Participating in Clear the Shelters on Saturday, August 19

August 17th, 2017

The Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) will participate in the Clear the Shelters pet adoption event this Saturday. IndyHumane will waive adoption fees on Saturday, August 19, as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to find new homes for homeless pets. Normal adoption procedures will apply, and information about the adoption process can be found at indyhumane.org.

“We’re looking forward to participating in this year’s Clear the Shelters initiative, and we think it’s a unique way to work together and find great homes for the many homeless animals in Central Indiana,” Steven Stolen, Chief Executive Officer at IndyHumane, says. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to participate in this national effort, and we hope it inspires our local community to take action and open their homes to animals in need.”
