IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center Offers Free Sterilizations for Community Cats

March 2nd, 2017

The IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center’s Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, located at 456 N. Holmes Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46222, is offering 600 free cat sterilizations for any community (outside) cat living in the following zip codes: 46201, 46203, 46205, 46218, 46227, 46226, 46219, 46222, 46241, and 46221. This initiative is made possible thanks to a $25,000 grant it recently received from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America.

This grant will fund targeted TNR (trap-neuter-return) efforts in the top 10 city zip codes from which Indianapolis Animal Care Services sees the highest intake of animals. Residents living in these 10 zip codes can call 317.602.3423 x 150 to make an appointment for one of the free sterilizations. At no additional cost to caretakers, this program will also assist with cat-trapping, provide an ear-tip, give core vaccinations (FVRCP and Rabies), and provide necessary medical treatment before returning cats to their communities.

“This is a really great opportunity for those caretakers who are looking after a lot of cats to get their colonies fixed. Cat caretakers should act now, as the no-cost opportunity will end when the grant money runs out," says Cass Goodnight, Executive Director of the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center. “We really want to see caretakers in this zip code radius take advantage of these free spay/neuter surgeries, and, in doing so, they’ll be directly helping combat cat overpopulation in Indianapolis, as well as within their colonies and neighborhoods. Keeping community cats out of shelters is one of the goals of the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center’s TNR program. And, getting them fixed, vaccinated, and ear-tipped is the best way to ensure they stay happy and healthy, in the neighborhoods they're used to, without the possibility of creating more litters!"

IndyHumane is a 501[c]3 organization that relies on grant funding and donations to offer free to low-cost sterilization services for pet owners in the community. For more information, call 317.602.3423 or visit indyhumane.org.

PetSmart Charities aims to proactively prevent pet homelessness and assist pets in need through many efforts, including facilitating adoption and expanding spay and neuter efforts. With the help of animal welfare partners, such as the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center, PetSmart Charities has funded over 1.4 million spay and neuter surgeries in the U.S. since 2009.

August 17th, 2017

The Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) will participate in the Clear the Shelters pet adoption event this Saturday. IndyHumane will waive adoption fees on Saturday, August 19, as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to find new homes for homeless pets. Normal adoption procedures will apply, and information about the adoption process can be found at indyhumane.org.

“We’re looking forward to participating in this year’s Clear the Shelters initiative, and we think it’s a unique way to work together and find great homes for the many homeless animals in Central Indiana,” Steven Stolen, Chief Executive Officer at IndyHumane, says. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to participate in this national effort, and we hope it inspires our local community to take action and open their homes to animals in need.”
