The Humane Society of Indianapolis offers our sincere condolences and prayers to Patrick Trainor’s family. Patrick lost his life this past weekend, but his caring and kindness will live on. Humane Society of Indianapolis Volunteer Coordinator Shawna Sims offers this remembrance:
“Pat was a sweet soul who helped our Junior Volunteer Program, now known as the Paws & Claws Club. This program allows young students to donate their time and love to the animals in our shelter during the summer months. Pat was one of our mentors for the program who oversee and help the younger participants as they assist in the different areas of our shelter.
I remember Pat being quiet but firm with the younger students. He made sure they stayed on task, but he also made fun and laughter a part of the experience. Pat helped new students learn how to properly interact with companion animals.
Leading and teaching a group of young, active students how to be calm and patient with dogs and cats can be quite challenging, but you never would have guessed that by observing Pat interact with the students with such tenderness.
Pat did a great job of bonding with our younger students, especially the boys. He showed them that it was okay to be a male teenager who cared for animals enough to want to help them. Pat perfectly balanced being their friend and their leader. He worked well with the other mentors and they all made my job easier by being so mature and trustworthy. I could not have asked for a better Mentor than Pat.”
Patrick dreamt of becoming a veterinarian, and his family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Indianapolis or to any charity of your choice. We’re honored by this request and thank the Trainor family for their wish to allow Patrick’s love for animals to continue on in the lives of those cared for at the shelter.

IndyHumane assisting Sevier County Humane Society following wildfires
December 5th, 2016
The Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) will be transporting dog and cat food, puppy pads, pelleted cat litter, crates, and other pet supplies to the Sevier County Humane Society on Tuesday, December 6, to assist with the shelter’s needs following the wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The Sevier County Humane Society has opened an emergency shelter location at the Sevier County Fairgrounds. At this location, the shelter is accepting stray animals as well as offering shelter for pets whose owners have been displaced from their homes due to the fires. The public has been instructed to go to the fairgrounds to search for any missing pets. Pet owners from the area can also board pets at this location temporarily if their homes were destroyed. Heather Hamilton, Operations Manager at the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center, contacted Sevier County Humane Society to see if the shelter was in need of supplies.
