IndyHumane assisting Sevier County Humane Society following wildfires
December 5th, 2016
The Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) will be transporting dog and cat food, puppy pads, pelleted cat litter, crates, and other pet supplies to the Sevier County Humane Society on Tuesday, December 6, to assist with the shelter’s needs following the wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The Sevier County Humane Society has opened an emergency shelter location at the Sevier County Fairgrounds. At this location, the shelter is accepting stray animals as well as offering shelter for pets whose owners have been displaced from their homes due to the fires. The public has been instructed to go to the fairgrounds to search for any missing pets. Pet owners from the area can also board pets at this location temporarily if their homes were destroyed. Heather Hamilton, Operations Manager at the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center, contacted Sevier County Humane Society to see if the shelter was in need of supplies.

IndyHumane’s Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic Reaches 5,000 Surgery Milestone
November 15th, 2016
The IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center’s Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic has now performed 5,000 sterilizations over the course of 2016. To be considered an official low-cost/high-volume spay/neuter clinic, a clinic must reach this important milestone over the course of a year.
“This is a very significant milestone for the Animal Welfare Center for so many reasons,” says Cass Goodnight, Director of Operations for the IndyHumane Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. “While we’re all ecstatic to have reached this milestone, we’re most excited by what this means for the animals in our city. Spaying and neutering cats and dogs greatly helps with our city’s animal overpopulation problem, and we’re happy to make an impact and help with this important issue.”
IndyHumane CEO John Aleshire to Retire
September 28th, 2016
John Aleshire, the Chief Executive Officer of the Humane Society of Indianapolis, is retiring after leading the organization for eight years.
Over the course of Aleshire’s eight-year tenure with IndyHumane, he stabilized the mission and operations of the shelter. Shortly after Aleshire was hired in September of 2008, he led management and board efforts to free the organization from financial insolvency and, in 2014, IndyHumane announced that the organization had eliminated all debt.
Aleshire collaborated with animal welfare groups across Indiana in order to create targeted efforts focused on animal overpopulation. Additionally, Aleshire worked to launch the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center and began two mobile services - one for low-cost vaccines, the other for adoptions – expanding the organization’s footprint in Central Indiana and saving even more lives along the way.
