Hurricane Harvey

September 1st, 2017

Friends and animal lovers,

Our hearts go out to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. We have received communication from many community members who are passionate about helping the animals displaced by the hurricane. We want to let you know how IndyHumane is helping, as well as what you can do to help.

Here is how IndyHumane is helping:
IndyHumane is in daily contact with several rescue organizations in the disaster area (Houston SPCA, HSUS, ASPCA, Denver Dumb Friends, etc.). We stand ready to provide supplies when needed, as well as persons to assist if so asked. We are also preparing to receive several displaced shelter dogs (unowned only) from Texas – this will provide kennel space in Texas shelters for animals whose owners will be searching for them.

Here is how you can help:
We strongly encourage those persons wishing to help to make a financial donation to Austin Pets Alive!, a trustworthy organization in the disaster area that is taking a leadership role in helping animal victims of the hurricane.

Untrained volunteers in disaster areas, though well-intentioned, may unknowingly impede the work and processes of the trained first responders. In addition, disaster areas pose physical dangers that most citizens are not properly trained to assess and handle.

Pet supplies such as crates and food may be needed in the future, but at the moment, storage and distribution in the affected area is impossible. In the wake of natural disasters (such as Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana), pet supplies that were sent prematurely ended up discarded or rotten due to lacking infrastructure for distribution.

We are proud to be part of such a caring, compassionate community of animal lovers. Thank you all for your desire to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

IndyHumane Participating in Clear the Shelters on Saturday, August 19

August 17th, 2017

The Humane Society of Indianapolis (IndyHumane) will participate in the Clear the Shelters pet adoption event this Saturday. IndyHumane will waive adoption fees on Saturday, August 19, as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to find new homes for homeless pets. Normal adoption procedures will apply, and information about the adoption process can be found at indyhumane.org.

“We’re looking forward to participating in this year’s Clear the Shelters initiative, and we think it’s a unique way to work together and find great homes for the many homeless animals in Central Indiana,” Steven Stolen, Chief Executive Officer at IndyHumane, says. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to participate in this national effort, and we hope it inspires our local community to take action and open their homes to animals in need.”
