What do Volunteers at HSI do to help out?

Humane Society of Indianapolis' volunteers work as a team in many areas of the organization. All of the volunteer positions that we have available are vital to achieving our mission. Volunteers work in the shelter with animals, assist at booths at community events, and make special events such as Mutt Strut possible.

Here are some of the current opportunities we have available. These and more opportunities will be discussed at the Information Session.

Canine Companions - This position assists the public with finding a shelter dog that is a match for their family and lifestyle, exercises dogs and spot-cleans kennels. Another important duty is educating adopters on the benefits of crate training, housebreaking techniques and the importance of dog obedience training. Lastly, Canine Companions teach adult dogs basic manners to make them more adoptable.

Puppy Partners - Here is a shocking fact; Puppy Partners hardly ever touch a puppy! Puppies have not fully developed their immune system. Because of this, they can not be handled too much by anyone including staff, volunteers or the public. As a Puppy Partner your main job is to protect pups from being handled and assist the public with finding a puppy that will grow up to be a match for their family and lifestyle. An additional important duty is educating adopters on the benefits of crate training, housebreaking techniques and the importance of dog obedience training. In addition to matchmaking, Puppy Partners work very hard to keep puppies comfortable by keeping kennels clean and by providing fresh bedding.

Feline Friends - These volunteers assist the public with finding an adult cat or kitten that is a match for their family and lifestyle. Also, Feline Friends spot-clean cages, perform basic grooming and clean litter boxes. An additional vital duty is educating adopters on litter box success, introducing the new cat to other animals at home and how to handle scratching.

Kennel Cleaning Assistants . This position helps our daily cleaning duties go more smoothly. Cleaning assistants spend time with animals while their kennels are being cleaned. This is a huge help to our staff members. Cleaning assistants also assist with feeding & watering of the animals, gathering bedding & toys, filling litter boxes, and making the kennels presentable to the public.

Customer Service - At the Humane Society of Indianapolis we offer many services from assisting the public with lost pets, helping adopters find that perfect match, obedience training, and offer memberships to our fabulous pet park. Volunteers offer quality customer service to visitors to the shelter and answer questions about all of these services and more.

Hospitality Hounds - These helpful Hounds have the very important role of ensuring that our four-legged friends have clean bedding to cuddle up on while with us. Also, they provide the sparkling clean bowls that our friends drink and dine from at the shelter. While not the most glamorous volunteer position a very important one that aids in the prevention of disease and helps make shelter animals comfortable.

Special Events and Information Booths - The Humane Society of Indianapolis has a variety of fundraisers and community events in which we rely on volunteers to lend a hand. Our biggest (and some would say most fun) event, Mutt Strut requires over 200 volunteers in order to be successful.
