This past weekend, the Humane Society of Indianapolis rescued several puppies and their mother from an abandoned, foreclosed house. If you’d like to help future litters of puppies and kittens in need, please consider fostering, volunteering, or donating supplies or money that makes it possible to save their precious young lives.
No Paws Left Behind, a Texas-based non-profit that works to help animal victims of foreclosure, worked with the bank who owned the foreclosed house, and alerted us to the pooches’ plight. With the bank’s permission, our Director of Operations, Christine Jeschke, rescued the dogs.
“I went to the house with my husband and a friend. We could hear the mother dog barking inside. Though the front door had a lock, there was a huge hole ripped in the back of the house where mom was able to enter. We had to use flashlights to move around since the windows were boarded up and there was no power. There was debris everywhere and broken glass. The house smelled foul. The mom ran out when we started moving around. At first we couldn’t find the puppies and feared the worst, but then found one alone in the basement. We put her safely into the car and went back in to look for more. A few minutes later we found four more puppies upstairs underneath a rotten mattress. All were fat and healthy but scared. They probably hadn’t seen so many flashlights shining in their faces and certainly weren’t used to being handled by humans.
Their howls brought mom running back into the house trying to protect them. We were able to get a leash around her, and after she calmed down, we tricked her into getting into the car to be with her puppies.
I think she knew she was safe once we arrived at the Humane Society of Indianapolis because she rested her head in my hands and sighed. I carried her in and Candace and Mark, who are on our medical team, carried her puppies. After the puppies’ physical exams and vaccines, we settled everyone in nicely for the night in a warm bed. The puppies are now with foster families since they are weaned and need some socialization.
Mom seems sweet now that she has relaxed. I was just back in her kennel and she tried to climb in my lap. Her name is Beatrice, and the puppies are named in a Shakespeare theme.”
After being socialized and cared for by their foster families, the puppies will be spayed/neutered and appear on our Available Dogs page.
In addition to these puppies, in the past several weeks, we’ve saved puppies seized in a drug bust by the FBI and found foster families willing & able to bottle-feed surrendered, unweaned and motherless puppies every several hours.
When you support the Humane Society of Indianapolis, you can be proud that you’re supporting an Indy-based, independent non-profit organization. THANK YOU for your support!
