Hearts Helping Hearts

Posted 12:00 pm, Sat. 1/30/2010

February is National Heart Month. According to the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women, heart disease is the #1 killer in the nation. The good news is that 80% of cases are preventable - and pets can help!

Visit the Humane Society of Indianapolis on Friday, February 5, and register with Go Red For Women to receive a free red dress pin by mail and recipes when you sign up, in addition to a monthly e-newsletter filled with heart-healthy information. If you don’t already receive “Furr-e-mail”, our monthly e-newsletter, you’ll get that, too!

While you’re at the shelter, take a dog out or pet a cat. Research shows that walking several times a week for 30 minutes a day helps your heart - so why not take the dog you’ve been eyeing on the website out for some fun? Or, better yet, volunteer and help several animals! Petting dogs and cats is also a relaxing way to reduce stress.

Whether you’re looking for a calm kitty to pet, a marathon mutt to run with, or shelter animals to spend time with, we have what you - and your heart - are looking for.
