Veterinary Technician
  


IndyHumane has a position open for a Veterinary Technician. Position interacts with adoption counselors, animal care techs/kennel cleaners, behavior staff, and the public surrendering animals. It is fast-paced and can be a little hectic when multiple, urgent things occur simultaneously. We are seeking a candidate who can go with the flow and be flexible. IndyHumane does not put animals down for space or time ever. We have a full surgical suite, an x-ray room including dental x-ray, isolation rooms, free-roaming cat adoptions, and destress rooms (three with an outdoor patio). We have wooded dog walking trails, yards for volunteers, a grooming room, a canine enrichment suite, a public dog park, and a public vaccine clinic.
 


Major Responsibilities of the position would include:
 


  • Ensuring that animals arriving at the shelter receive a thorough initial exam and that vaccination protocols are followed consistently.
  
  • Daily, thorough cleaning of screening/intake room and occasional assistance with cleaning of cages in other areas.
  
  • Monitoring the health of the animals upon arrival and alerting the veterinarian of any urgent care needs.
  
  • Assisting with medicating animals in the shelter as directed.
  
  • Assisting with euthanasia as needed.
  
  • Creating and maintaining detailed computer records for each animal that is handled.
  
  • Prepping animals for surgery days. Possibly assisting in surgery.
  
  • Reviewing charts to see what animals need daily related to their care and movement through the adoption system.
  
  • Treating all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
  
  • Stocking supplies and sorting donations.
  
  • Performing fecals, doing UAs, drawing blood, administering vaccines, inserting microchips, restraining animals.
 


Specific Job Skills:
 


  • Must have 2+ years of prior experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter.
  
  • Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, cats as well as large and possibly untrained dogs.
  
  • Familiarity with symptoms of diseases common to dogs and cats.
  
  • Comfortable with web-based programs, knowledge of Petpoint a plus.
  
  • Knowledge of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic veterinary treatment of domestic animals.
  
  • Strong animal handling skills and knowledge of animal behavior.
  
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and time management skills essential.
  
  • Affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the work place.
  
  • Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction.
  
  • Able to work in the busy, demanding environment of a shelter.
  
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English required.
  
  • Ability to identify problems or patient conditions (medical and behavioral) that need to be brought to the attention of the immediate supervisor or the veterinary technician.
  
  • Treat people and animals with respect; contribute to effective teamwork; and foster public relations beneficial to the shelter and its programs.
  
  • Familiarity with animals; knowledge of animal behavior or experience volunteering or working with a rescue group, humane society, foster care involvement or other animal welfare agency is a plus.
 


Position is full-time and includes benefits. Pay is $11-13 per hour depending on experience. This position will require weekend hours.
