GIANT EASTER BUNNY TO APPEAR AT HUMANE SOCIETY OF INDIANAPOLIS

Springtime brings Easter Bunny and start of kitten and puppy season to HSI

INDIANAPOLIS (April 8, 2009) - The Easter Bunny will make a live appearance at the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI), 7929 N. Michigan Rd., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. Springtime means puppy and kitten season has begun in Indianapolis, and the Easter Bunny will be hopping around and handing out Easter eggs filled with discounts and other goodies to promote dog and cat adoption at a time of year when the shelter starts to receive more litters of puppies and kittens.

The Humane Society of Indianapolis does not euthanize for space, placed approximately 4,000 cats and dogs into loving homes last year, and hopes to find caring families for 6,000 in 2009. Many of those animals will be puppies and kittens born when unaltered dogs' and cats' breeding cycles coincide with the warmer weather; HSI hopes more animal lovers will consider adopting from the shelter to save an animal and save money. Adoption prices range from $75 to $150, and all cats and dogs available for adoption have received vaccinations, microchips and spay or neuter surgery before adoption. Many animals receive more advanced care before going home as well, such as heartworm treatment and obedience training.

A real-time list of available animals, events, and behavior and training resources is available at www.indyhumane.org.

HSI DONATES HUNDREDS OF STUFFED DOG TOYS TO IMPD'S CLOTHE-A-CHILD PROGRAM
December 05, 2008

Toys will be given to underprivileged Indianapolis children for the holidays.

INDIANAPOLIS (December 5, 2008) - The Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) donated several hundred stuffed dog toys to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) for distribution in the IMPD's Clothe-A-Child program, which gives toys and clothing to underprivileged children in Indianapolis during the holidays. HSI executive director John Aleshire, IMPD's Lt. Jeffrey Duhamell and others loaded boxes stuffed with the toys into an IMPD van at HSI's campus, 7929 N. Michigan Rd.

"A vendor donated hundreds of the stuffed Build-A-Bear dogs to us, which we've given out with pet adoptions," Aleshire said. "We know the stuffed dogs will bring smiles to the faces of kids who might need some cheering up this holiday season."

Starting December 17th, the IMPD will give each child in the Clothe-A-Child program a stuffed dog in addition to clothing. Any extra animals will go to Bears on Patrol, a program in which IMPD officers keep stuffed animals in their patrol cars to help comfort young children exposed to traumatic situations.

HSI OFFERS FREE PET IDENTIFICATION IN EXCHANGE FOR DONATIONS TO GLEANERS FOOD BANK
December 01, 2008

Local pet owners to receive free microchip with a donation of non-perishable food items

INDIANAPOLIS (December 1, 2008) - The Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) will offer free microchips and registration for pets when their owners donate a minimum of five non-perishable food items to Gleaners Food Bank on Saturday, December 6, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at HSI's campus, 7929 N. Michigan Rd.

"The holidays are all about giving," says John Aleshire, executive director of the Humane Society of Indianapolis. "This event benefits pets and people - it's a great way to give to the community."

City of Indianapolis code requires that cats and dogs bear permanent means of identification, and microchips are a simple and effective way of permanently identifying a pet. After the microchip is painlessly administered, the pet's identification and the owner's contact information are registered in a database, allowing shelters and veterinarians nationwide to identify the animal and contact the owner in the event the pet becomes lost.

HSI offers microchipping to the public during regular adoption hours, no appointment necessary, for $20. However, this holiday season, pet owners can help their pets and their community by donating a bag of non-perishable grocery items to Gleaners Food Bank in exchange for a free pet microchip. Gleaners (gleaners.org) distributes food to charities that serve hundreds of thousands of hungry Hoosier families. ###

HUMANE SOCIETY OF INDIANAPOLIS APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
November 25, 2008

Christine Jeschke will bring wealth of animal-welfare experience to new position

INDIANAPOLIS (November 25, 2008) - John Aleshire, executive director of the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI), announced this morning the appointment of Christine Jeschke as director of operations. Jeschke will oversee all operations of the shelter, including its wellness center, and will help HSI begin its low-cost spay/neuter services.

"Christine's knowledge of and passion for animal welfare is invaluable to us," said Aleshire. "I could not be more excited to have her on the team."

Jeschke was previously employed as vice president of human resources at Liquid Transport Corp, an Indiana-based bulk transportation company. Currently, Jeschke serves as the president of Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana, Inc., a nonprofit that sponsors low-cost spay/neuter programs. Prior to becoming president, she served as the group's treasurer for four years. She was also recently elected to HSI's board of directors, where she serves as a liaison to grassroots animal-welfare groups. Once her employment begins at HSI, she will step down as a member of the board.

Jeschke has volunteered in many capacities for Indianapolis-based animal-welfare groups including Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership, Move to Act and Indy Pit Crew.

"My life has been dedicated to improving animal welfare," said Jeschke, owner of four dogs and four cats, all rescued or adopted. "This is an amazing opportunity to help serve the animals of Indianapolis."

Humane Society of Indianapolis Policy Changes Improve Local Animal Welfare
October 28, 2008

Humane Society of Indianapolis Policy Changes Improve Local Animal Welfare
Changes Focus on Marion County's immediate animal overpopulation problem

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Since John Aleshire became the new executive director of the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI), he has been adamant on improving the immediate need of animal welfare in Marion County. To help meet the challenge of finding good homes for unwanted or stray animals in Marion County, HSI has implemented several policy changes.

While there are many animals in need of a home, HSI has ceased the transfer of animals from shelters outside of Marion County in order to focus on the immediate need of the county it serves. In the last six months, HSI has brought a record 631 animals to its facility for adoption from Indianapolis Animal Care and Control compared to 87 animals during the same period in 2007. During September, HSI brought 167 animals from the city shelter.

"At HSI it is all about the animals," said Aleshire. "We will continue to focus on the metropolitan Indianapolis area until all of its animal welfare needs are met. This approach enables the Humane Society of Indianapolis to place more strays from the city shelter in homes than ever before."

In addition to focusing on Marion County's pet overpopulation, HSI has changed its fee structure. To help reduce the financial burden of pet adoption and ownership, HSI has capped adoption fees at $150. Also, if a person must surrender their pet, HSI has permanently waived owner surrender fees.

"As a result of these changes, we are positioning ourselves as the place to go if an owner must surrender his or her pet," said Aleshire. "Once we receive a surrendered pet, we make a commitment to the owner to place the pet on our adoption floor and provide care until a new owner is found. Every dog or cat on our adoption floor remains there and is cared for until they find a new home."

HSI has also made a commitment to collaborate and share resources with animal care groups actively working in Indianapolis on behalf of abused, neglected or homeless animals.

"In the past months, we've begun working to establish supportive relationships with many of the animal welfare groups," said Aleshire. "These partnerships are in the best interest of all animals in need in Marion County, and essential to reducing the number of animals in need of a home."
