Programs
Adoption
A wide range of animals is available for adoption every day the shelter is open to the public. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals who have passed a thorough physical and temperament evaluation are waiting to find loving new homes. Adoption counselors help adopters consider all the options and make the best match. For more information about the adoption process and available animals, visit our Animals page.
Microchipping
Microchipping is a means of permanent pet identification. A small microchip is inserted under the skin between the shoulder blades. Chip readers used by animal shelters, vet clinics and animal control officers display the chip’s number, which is linked to the pet owner’s contact information in a national database. The insertion process is quick and simple, and is one of the best ways to ensure a pet is returned to its owner if it ever becomes lost. All animals adopted from the Humane Society have been microchipped. Pet owners may bring in their own animals for chipping. For more information regarding walk-in microchip fees, visit our Walk-in Microchipping page.
Pet Park
Central Indiana’s first off-leash dog park is on the campus of the Humane Society of Indianapolis. The park allows a place for owners to exercise and enjoy their dogs in a safe, fenced area. There is a canine agility course that is a highlight of the park. The grounds also include approximately 1.5 miles of wooded trails. All that is required to obtain a membership is a copy of your pet's current vaccination record, including rabies, and you'll need to fill out an application. After that, it is just an annual registration fee of $50 for the first dog and $30 for each additional dog.
Dog Obedience Classes
One of the greatest joys a dog owner can have is the company of a well-trained and socialized pet. HSI offers classes to assist you and your dog from puppyhood through adolescence and into adulthood. Owners of animals adopted from the Humane Society get a discount on registrations. For more information, visit our Canine Obedience Training page or call 317.876.2173.
Behavior Helpline
The Humane Society of Indianapolis' Behavior Training Department provides pet owners with solutions for animal behavior problems through its Behavior Helpline. This free service can help troubled pets and owners learn how to live together happily, and possibly prevent an animal from being surrendered to the shelter. For more information, visit our Behavior Helpline page or call 317.876.2173.
PetSafe
The Humane Society of Indianapolis offers temporary care for animals whose owners are experiencing a crisis, e.g., fire, flood, etc. Requests for temporary animal care must come through the Red Cross or other designated shelter. For more information, call 317.872.5650, extension 135.
Helping Paws
The Humane Society of Indianapolis accepts donations for food and pet supplies from anyone who would like to help others in the community needing assistance to care for their pets. Donations of unopened containers of food, collars, leashes, toys, beds, blankets and kennels may be dropped off in the HSI Adoption Lobby during normal business hours. For more information, call 317.872.5650, extension 134.
