Rescue Relief is an IndyHumane program that rescues slightly damaged bags of food and pet supplies from local pet supply warehouses and then redistributes them to over 90 rescues and shelters across Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. One of our partners in Ohio, United Pet Fund, is a similar distribution facility like ours and has an additional 90 members in their program that are impacted by the donations they pick up from us, which brings our total to almost 200 organizations impacted.
Each rescue pays a small fee per visit, to assist in covering the costs of the program. Most of these organizations have told us that they are now able to reallocate their animal care funds to cover the costs of surgeries and medicines, instead of food, which is increasing quality of care and the number of animals that receive a second chance. Several dozen organizations also pull items they are able to sell through fundraisers, which helps them raise additional funds to support their organizations.
All members in Rescue Relief are required to share intake and adoption numbers with us. In 2016 over 30,000 animals were impacted by this program and we are on track to double this impact by the end of 2017, in addition to the 4,000+ animals that we cared for here at IndyHumane each year.
In 2016, over 650,000lbs of food and supplies were rescued from the landfill. We passed this number at the end of May and are on track to more than double this by the end of 2017.
