A Message from Our CEO

One of my favorite stories from my history with IndyHumane is about how unsure I was, initially, when asked to consider joining the team as CEO. My perception of the organization had not always been positive; however, I quickly saw the vision and optimism held by the board of directors and I jumped at the opportunity to do what I could to help achieve those lofty goals.

Since September of 2008, I’ve had the privilege of leading this organization and seeing, firsthand, the powerful connection between people and their pets. My responsibility is to the pets and animals we serve at IndyHumane, but also to the donors and supporters who make our mission possible. We have worked tirelessly to ensure every dollar that is given to IndyHumane is treasured, each expense is evaluated carefully, and that every decision we make has the best interest of our pets in mind.

I am so proud of what you have helped us accomplish: From top-notch veterinary care, to our pioneering hub for services at the IndyHumane Animal Welfare Center, to the nationally recognized Outreach & Education Program, IndyHumane is leading the way toward an Indianapolis where no adoptable pet is ever put down due to a simple lack of resources. I’m proud, and you should be proud of what your contributions mean for this city and our community.

Thank you for being part of the IndyHumane story, and thank you for your ongoing support of our pets and our mission.

A Message From The Chairman of the Board

The Humane Society of Indianapolis has been one of my favorite organizations for many years. I have watched this organization transform from a sleepy shelter to one of the most active and visionary animal welfare nonprofits anywhere, and it’s been my absolute pleasure to serve as a member of the board of directors since 2010.

The board of directors of the Humane Society of Indianapolis is tasked with governance and oversight of IndyHumane’s operations, fundraising, and finances, and we do not take that charge lightly. I am very fortunate to have some of the sharpest minds and most passionate hearts in Central Indiana sharing their time and talent with this board. The high expectations we place on ourselves are rivaled only by the commitment held by the staff and volunteers who make IndyHumane’s day-to-day operations possible.

One of the many facets we oversee is the selection and compensation of IndyHumane’s Chief Executive Officer. The executive committee of the board of directors reviews the CEO’s performance in detail annually, and compares his or her salary and benefits to leaders of other nonprofits and organizations of similar size, budget, and staffing levels. The committee consolidates this information into a recommendation for the full board of directors, and then the board reviews this recommendation during an executive session. During this executive session, any changes to the CEO’s compensation, or comments on performance, are addressed and voted on by the board.

The CEO’s current annual salary is $120,000.

IndyHumane is your leading voice for animal welfare. My fellow board members and I are committed to ensuring that voice does not waver; that it has the resources, sets policies, and follows procedures to continue pursuing its life-saving mission. One day, with your support, we will end pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanasia in Central Indiana, and I am grateful to be a part of that mission with you.

Audit & Finance Committees

The Humane Society of Indianapolis maintains two independent, board-directed committees to provide executive-level oversight to financial processes and requirements pertaining to the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US-GAAP), as well as filings and standards required by the Internal Revenue Service. The Finance and Audit Committees help ensure IndyHumane executives and management make sound financial and investment decisions, help select outside counsel when necessary, and approve the annual independent financial audit.
