Full-time Veterinary Technician

Now seeking a Veterinary Technician for a rewarding position at IndyHumane! As a member of our intake staff and medical team you will work with a highly skilled team to provide skilled, compassionate, veterinary care to shelter animals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that animals arriving at the shelter receive a thorough initial physical exam and that vaccination and other medical protocols are followed consistently.
  • Monitoring the health of the animals during medical rounds each day, and alerting the veterinarian or supervisor of any urgent care needs.
  • Medicating animals daily, obtaining samples & running diagnostics, wound care, performing venipuncture and lab tests, rehabilitation, critical care, surgical assistance, taking radiographs, administering vaccines, inserting microchips, restraining animals, etc.
  • Communicating with adopters regarding the health of their adopted pet, scheduling post-adoption medical appointments, obtaining a thorough history at time of appointment, and relaying treatment plans as directed by a veterinarian.
  • Creating and maintaining detailed computer records for each animal that is handled. Reviewing medical records and following protocols to see what animals need related to their care and that they continue to move through the adoption system.
  • Prepping & recovering animals from surgery, restocking, cleaning, & maintaining the surgery area as assigned
  • Treating all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance
  • Communicating and interacting professionally and collaboratively with patrons, management, medical staff, animal care staff, customer service and volunteers.
  • Communicating professionally with patrons at the intake door, this includes those surrendering, those seeking information or resources, those who have lost or found a pet, those dropping off donations, etc.
  • Demonstrating low-stress animal handling skills.
  • Communicating and following safety and hazard procedures. 


  • Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology, or significant experience working in a Veterinary setting.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Computer and money-handling skills.
  • Passion for animal welfare.
  • Conflict resolution skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

Pay varies upon education and skill set.  Benefits include 401k, competitive PTO accrual rate, pet-wellness program, dog park membership, and others

Technicians typically work four, 10-hour days, including one weekend day.   Other details: A background check and drug test will be required of selected candidate.

Part-Time Volunteer Programs Assistant

Volunteer Programs Assistant Needed! If you like working with people of all ages AND animals, this may be the perfect position for you!

Summary of position duties and responsibilities:

The Volunteer Programs Assistant will provide administrative, training, and supervisory support for Volunteer Programs & Youth Camps/Programs.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Respond to Volunteer inquiries
  • Maintain database for tracking and scheduling Volunteers and Volunteer Opportunities
  • Maintain effective communication with Volunteers via email, phone, and social networking sites
  • Lead Volunteer trainings
  • Assist with managing Youth Volunteers (Pat’s Paws Club, Service Saturdays, & Youth Camps)
  • Assist with coordination, training, and supervision of Groups and Community Service Workers
  • Assist with coordination of Volunteer Appreciation/Recognition Programs
  • Assist with the coordination of Volunteer Meetings/Continuing Education Classes
  • Provide/Recruit coverage for Holiday Volunteer Shifts
  • Maintain areas used by Volunteers
  • Track Volunteer product inventory
  • Provide adoption updates for Volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, skills, and abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Great written and verbal skills
  • Computer literate: familiar with Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.
  • Volgistics Database experience a plus
  • Prior work experience/volunteer experience with dogs and cats preferred; must love animals!
  • Prior work experience with children/young teens preferred; must enjoy working with youth!
  • Energetic, patient, responsible, team-player
  • Ability to handle dogs and cats without restrictions
  • Ability to log thousands of walking miles performing shelter tours and leading trainings
  • Position subject to criminal background check and drug screening

Position is hourly and includes pet wellness benefits and other discounts! Position is currently part-time with opportunities for advancement.

Must have at least 1 weekend day available and holiday availability.
